MetroLaser, Inc. was founded in 1988 by Dr. James D. Trolinger and Dr. Cecil F. Hess with the mission of developing and commercializing new technologies and products in the area of laser-based measurements and diagnostics. With the rapid advancement of lasers and photonics, new market opportunities continue to emerge for a variety of potential products. A highly successful business strategy was developed for combining and leveraging industrial and university resources to establish a team that has since become internationally recognized for innovation and state-of-the-art advancements in the science of measurement. A core team of select scientists and engineers, with extensive experience in laser diagnostics research and development, has been augmented by forming strong, formal working relationships with researchers in universities and with industrial partners. This university/industry collaboration has provided MetroLaser with a wealth of new ideas, technical talent, advanced laboratory capability, and access to existing technology resulting in the generation of solutions to a wide range of problems and development of new products. Since its inception, MetroLaser has formed teaming agreements with 20 groups in 15 universities (Univ. of Mississippi, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UC Davis, UC Riverside, Cal Tech, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, Alabama A&M, Univ. of Alabama, Univ. of North Carolina, Univ. of Arizona, Univ. of Connecticut, and Wayne State University) as well as industrial partners. During that time, MetroLaser has acted as prime contractor on over 300 contracts and as a subcontractor on approximately 75 additional contracts generating, by 2007, annual sales of approximately $4.3 million from a combination of government and industrial contracts, services to industry, and from the sale of optical measurement and diagnostic products. Today, MetroLaser has 24 employees, including 14 with Ph.D. degrees, who have attained a worldwide reputation for innovation and problem solving. MetroLaser is routinely contracted by major U.S. , European, and Asian companies to provide measurement services for aerospace, aerodynamic, and propulsion applications. On May 4, 1995, MetroLaser was named the National Small Business Prime Contractor of the Year for 1995 by the U.S. Small Business Administration in an awards ceremony at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, VA. In May of 1994, MetroLaser President, Dr. Cecil F. Hess, was presented the Distinguished Award of Achievement for Leadership and Dedication to Excellence in a ceremony that took place at the White House and which was attended by President Bill Clinton. In July of 1992, MetroLaser’s Vice President, Dr. James D. Trolinger, received the George W. Goddard award for achievements and applications of optical diagnostics from the International Society for Optical Engineering. MetroLaser is an active participant in the SBIR and STTR programs with a win rate greater than the national average. Since its inception, MetroLaser has also maintained a large base of non-SBIR funding, from both government and industry, relying on the SBIR program primarily as a resource for research and development with the potential to lead to new products and technology. To date MetroLaser has been granted 10 patents and in 2008 has four patent applications pending. SBIR proposal topics are critically reviewed and selectively chosen to be consistent with our company mission and synergistic with ongoing MetroLaser research. In this way, SBIR research programs are always highly leveraged by ongoing, non-SBIR programs that provide knowledge and equipment that would not otherwise be affordable by the SBIR program alone. SBIR customers of MetroLaser have often expressed amazement at the results the company has delivered in comparison to other SBIR contractors who rely primarily on unsupplemented SBIR funding.
